In their hard-hitting open letter to Edinburgh Chief Executive Sue Bruce, four highly experienced civil engineers levelled scathing criticism of the engineering planning status of the Edinburgh trams project.   It appears that the Council officials have a strategy of trying to complete the section which is on view to the public rather than the connection from the airport to Haymarket.    Presumably the strategy will be that "we have all these tram lines in place within the city now so we need money to finish it off please".     It is a sort of open handed blackmail exercise and the SNP may well fall for it, claiming that "it had to be finished to protect the reputation of Edinburgh" or some such twaddle.   They will then try to blame all the other parties for the mess that has been created!   The sensible option would have been to stop wasting public money and to have stopped at Haymarket, but John Swinney and the SNP actually forced the Council to reverse its vote and drove the project on to St Andrew Square by his threat to withhold the remaining £70 million.   It is almost unbelievable when you think that we are in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s - which planet do these people inhabit?
