Open Data at G8... not in Edinburgh

Suddenly Summer and sunshine is breaking out all over where the Public's right to know is concerned.

Except in Edinburgh.

While the reported potential committment from the G8 countries has yet to materialise, the trailing of it in newspapers like the Telegraph indicate some kind of realisation is dawning that 'their data' IS actually 'our data'- and it's in their interest to wake up and realise this.

On this website we have  avoided publishing anything like a manifesto or list of things we’d like to see, not because the residents have no ideas, but in order to avoid the council trying to turn any debate into one about ‘our ideas’ – rather than the still unacknowledged and many defects in ‘their ideas’.

The article by Prof Richard Williams in one of the world's most respected magazines has created a storm.

As ever the report in the Evening news about the ongoing storm is at least as interesting for what the comments section has to say as the report itself.

That may be the reaction in Edinburgh Council to an article by an Edinburgh University academic that examines some unpalatable aspects and failures about the way the city has been run and the effects of these systemic governance failures now emerging across the city.

Here's an article spelling out why traffic fumes are dangerous.

As the writer shows, and every scientific study for several decades has shown, these pollutants are killers.

Obviously traffic causes these pollutants, and so we have to do something about traffic- and urgently? Right?
