Air pollution in the UK shortens the lives of 28,000 people a year according to the latest estimate.

According to the published official figures it causes 205 deaths every year in Edinburgh.

You couldn't make it up...you'd think

Edinburgh Council called it "prudential borrowing" in 2011...after blowing £500M+ with absolutely nothing to show for anything on the Edinburgh tram project...they were desperate.

Desperate enough to decide saving their face was worth another £500M or so of OUR money.

They wanted *something*...anything...to give even a pretence of *success* in a project that had turned into a worldwide byword for incompetence. And so the decision was made to throw another Half a Billion or so after the one already spent.

Truth will out

This website contains a lot of source documents, records of votes, council papers and comments on history of the tram project.

In 2011 the City of Edinburgh borrowed £276M to finish some of the tram line that had by then consumed virtually all the £545M without anything of any significance being built.

The questions were about the seriousness of traffic pollution obvious even the,n and the apparent blind spot within the tram project around what would happen in our city when so much road space formerly used by traffic was being taken by the tram.

Traffic levels down but pollution up

Last year, in January the City of Edinburgh Council's transport and executive committee sat down to the  transport review in which the usual boxes were ticked, and (self) congratulatory pats on (own) backs flagged up by the helpful people in the Transport department at Waverley Court.

What Edinburgh can learn from Somerset, Staffordshire, Rochdale ---- and Abraham Lincoln

In Somerset, Lord (Chris) Smith is  learning a lesson that box ticking bureaucrats learned in Mid Staffs and former prime Minister Gordon Brown learned in Rochdale after talking to 'some bigoted woman'..... as Abraham Lincoln said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time--but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

He didn't add, but could have, that the longer you try and fool all of the people all the time, usually the worse the smash up when the fooling has to stop.
